Tipping Etiquette

Tipping vendors can be a tricky subject, largely because most brides do not know what is expected in this area. Unless you have planned a wedding with someone before or work in the wedding industry, it is likely that you aren't sure where to start when it comes to which vendors you should and should not tip, much less what the typical amount is (don't worry - you're not alone). We asked our girl Ashley Stork with Magnolia Vine Events to shed some light on this topic for us, and she has a few helpful tips based off of common practice that are sure to clear up some confusion!

A tip is not necessarily expected, but always appreciated.

Vendors that you definitely want to tip include hair and makeup artists, bartenders, waitstaff, chef, drivers, coat check, valet attendants, and officiant. Your officiant may even ask that your tip be a donation to his or her home church. Vendors such as photographer, videographer, planner, florist, production company, and other entertainment vendors can also be tipped if you believe the level of service deserves it. We believe it is appropriate to tip these vendors monetarily or give them a lovely gift with a note. Remember, these are the folks working hard for you on your wedding day, so at the very least, a thank you note is appropriate.

Reference your invoice to see if you have paid gratuity because it may already be included.

When you are working on your budget, make sure to leave room for tipping vendors who do not include gratuity in their invoices. As you are preparing your tip envelopes for the wedding day, you will want to be sure of this so that you don't make checks for costs that are already covered.
